When it came to finding out about employee ownership, Nikki Poole, Managing Director of Hedges Law knew she had to speak to Robert Camp.

“Robert was the first person to take a law firm into employee ownership and was instrumental in Stephens Scown placing so highly in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work for list. When I started thinking about employee ownership as an option for Hedges Law, I knew Robert’s insights would be incredibly valuable,” says Nikki.

Robert has supported Nikki through the employee ownership process. She says: “He has so much experience in this area, from working with corporate lawyers on the legal aspects to contacts with the Solicitors Regulation Authority. But he also understands that employee ownership is about people and that the employee engagement work and cultural considerations are vital.”

Robert presented to the Hedges Law team and advised Nikki throughout the process. “Robert’s input was so helpful. He provided great suggestions for employee engagement and helped enormously with decisions on the timing and tone of announcements.”

Hedges Law became employee owned in May 2021 and the firm has not looked back. “Robert was a guiding light in helping us to become employee owned. We are still at the very early stages, but employee ownership is already bringing us so much, from helping with recruitment, to encouraging collaboration across teams. We are a firm with a long history, and becoming employee owned secures our future.”

The Covid-19 pandemic has posed significant challenges for charities. CHAT – a charity working to provide better homes and security for those most in need in our society – had to adapt quickly to new working patterns and the huge need for its services as a result of the pandemic.

“A year on from the start of the pandemic, we were frankly pretty exhausted and started to ask ourselves what the future might look like for us. We did not want to go back to how things were before Covid,” explains Simon Friend, Chair of CHAT.

The charity needed help in this process. “We knew we had to find space and time to reflect but we had no idea quite how to go about it.  Even trying to work out how we could do this seemed very tiring!”

Simon has known Robert Camp for over 20 years as a friend and professional adviser. He reached out to Robert for help.

“Right from the off, Robert was enthusiastic and knew what would help us and facilitated a great strategy planning day for our executive trustee team, CEO and fundraiser.  The day was excellent and although many of us had done SWOT analysis and the like before, Robert was always fresh, fast paced and kept us focused.  So many helpful, positive and new things came out of our discussions,” Simon adds.
